Training on Solar Radiation and Modern Technologies
07-09 July, 2009; Islamabad, Pakistan

A short training course on Solar Radiation and Modern Technologies was successfully conducted by SPAS Directorate at Ionospheric Research Station (IRS), Islamabad from 07-09 July 2009. The course was attended by eleven participants from local organizations/institutes which included Armed Forces, CAA, PIA etc. The course consisted of technical session which included lectures, visits of ionospheric sounding system and magnetic observatory to provide field experience to the trainees and discussion session after each lecture. The training course covered the topics of GNSS, impacts of solar radiation on earth, Ionospheric & Magnetospheric Physics, HF Communication etc.

 

Training on Space Weather Monitoring
19-21 July, 2008; Karachi, Pakistan

A short training course on Space Weather Monitoring was successfully conducted by SPAS Directorate at National Centre for Remote Sensing and Geo-Informatics, SUPARCO HQs, Karachi from 19-20 Aug 2008. Total numbers of participants were thirteen; one of them was from Indonesia sponsored by ISNET. The remaining twelve were from local organizations/institutes which included Pakistan Navy, Pakistan Air Force, NED University of Engineering & Technology, Survey of Pakistan, CAA, Pakistan Air Force Karachi Institute of Economics & Technology and Punjab University. Three lectures were delivered by guest speakers while the remaining lectures were delivered by the scientists of SPAS Directorate. The course covered lectures on different topics which included Introduction of Space, Formation of Space Weather, Role of Magnetosphere and Ionosphere in Space Weather, Use of models for Space Weather Conditions etc. To provide field experience to participants, two visits, one each of Karachi Ionospheric Station and Magnetic Observatory were included in the training course.

 

Training Course on Climate Change and Natural Resource Management
15 18 July 2008; Lahore, Pakistan

Pakistan Space & Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) organized a 4- day Training Course on Climate Change and Natural Resources Management from 15 18 July 2008 at SUPARCO office, Lahore.

.

Thirty participants from the national and international R&D organisations, universities and the private sector attended the course.

The course covered lectures on different aspects of climate changes and its impacts on natural resources, role of ocean in weather & climate, application of GIS in environmental monitoring, techniques of disaster monitoring, use of satellite data for digital Image processing & analysis to enhance the technical capability of participants to manage natural resources. The diverse background of the participants provided an excellent opportunity for exchange of experiences and sharing of ideas.

 

Training Course on Atmospheric Sciences
27 30 November 2007; Karachi, Pakistan

SUPARCO organised a four-day training course on Atmospheric Sciences from 27 30 November 2007 at SUPARCO Headquarters, Karachi.

.

Eleven participants from public and private sector organisations, two participants from SPARRSO, Bangladesh and one from GORS, Syria attended the course.

The course covered topics such as environmental monitoring, global climate change and natural hazards like cyclones, floods, earthquakes, tsunamis, droughts and deforestation using remote sensing and GIS techniques.

 

Training Course on Impact of Solar Radiation on Earth, Ionosphere and Geomagnetic Field
25 26 July 2007; Karachi, Pakistan

.

A short training course on Impact of Solar Radiation on Earth, Ionosphere & Geomagnetic Field was organized by SUPARCO at Karachi. Six participants from national organizations including and one from Indonesia attended the course.

The topics related to sun; its emissions, ionosphere; its sounding, Maximum Usable Frequency / Optimum Traffic Frequency, MUF / FOT prediction, geomagnetism, earthquake prediction were covered during the training. The course also included two visits to Karachi Ionospheric Station (KIS) and Magnetic Observatory. The training provided an opportunity to exchange experience and share knowledge with researchers and the data users.

 

Training Course on Environment Pollution Monitoring
29 May 02 June 2006; Khanspur, Pakistan

A training course on Environment Pollution Monitoring was organised by SUPARCO and Center for Integrated Mountain Research (CIMR), University of the Punjab at Khanaspur, Ayubia, from 29 May to 02 June 2006.

The objective of this training course was to share the current knowledge and impart hands-on experience in Lab and Field, regarding Environmental Sciences.

The course comprised topics such as methods and tools used for Environmental Monitoring, taking stock of mountain biodiversity, water sector environmental management in Pakistan, complexities of environmental pollution, climate change and global warming, aerosol and aerosol characteristics, environmental monitoring issues in Catchments Areas, Sustainable Resource Management, Dispersion Modeling and Applications & Impacts of Vehicular Emission on Living Environment, Satellite Remote Sensing Data in Environmental Monitoring, Land Degradation & Solid Waste Management.

 

Training Course on Data acquisition and interpretation of Suspended Particulate Matter
November December 2005

A Six Week Training Course, under the Government TOKTEN programme on Data acquisition and interpretation of Suspended Particulate Matter (PM2.5), Black Carbon, Elemental Carbon, SO2, O3, SO4-2 was organised by SUPARCO from 18 Nov 2005 at Space Applications and Research Wing of SUPARCO. Dr. Liaquat Husain, Professor of Environmental Chemistry, State University of New York, Albany, USA conducted the course.

 

Training course on Environmental Monitoring
25 29 July 2005; Karachi, Pakistan

SUPARCO organised a short training course on Environmental Monitoring at Karachi from 25 -29 July, 2005. The Training Course was intended to enhance capacity-building in Muslim countries in the fields of space sciences, space technology and its applications.
 

The course objectives were to educate specialists from OIC countries in Environmental Monitoring Applications in support of their socio-economic development. The course covered the broad areas such as Complexities & Importance of Understanding Environmental Pollution, Air Pollutant Detection & Measurement Techniques, Environmental Legislation & National Environmental Quality Standards, Dispersion Modeling and Applications, Water and Waste Water Treatment & Analysis Techniques, Lab Work on air, Water and Soil Analysis, Global Warming & Climate Change, Water Resources-Pakistan Scenario, Source Apportionment in Ambient Aerosol, Satellite and GPS Applications in Environmental Monitoring etc.

 

Regional Workshop on Monitoring and Protection of Natural Environment
30 August 04 September 2004

SUPARCO, in collaboration with the United Nations Organisation, organised a regional Workshop on Monitoring and Protection of Natural Environment from 30 August 04 September 2004. The workshop was aimed at evaluating the impact of 1990-2003 series of the United Nations/Sweden Training courses on Remote Sensing Education for Educators and was required to identify the major reasons for high /low rate of success in implementing the knowledge received by the participants of the course in Sweden. It was also to consider the nature and scope of possible support to ensure that on-going efforts had established firm roots with the educational communities in the countries of the region.

 

Training Course on Environmental Pollution Monitoring
05 - 08 July 2004

A Short Training Course on Environmental Pollution Monitoring was held from 5-8 July, 2004 covering lectures, laboratory / workshop practical and discussions on National Environmental Quality Standards, etc.

The course was aimed at imparting the latest techniques and methodologies in studying industrial environmental problems to various national agencies. About 15 individuals from different national agencies participated in the course.

 

Training course on Aerosols, Health Effects and Climate
21 25 July 2003

A Short Training course on Aerosols, Health Effects and Climate was organised by SUPARCO from 21st to 25th July 2003 under the Government TOKTEN programme. Participants from various institutions, organisations and universities belonging to various environmental disciplines participated in the course. Dr Liaquat Hussain, Chairman, Department of Health and Toxicology, Albany, New York, USA, and SUPARCO officials delivered lectures on various topics such as Photochemical Oxidants, Acid Rain, Fog, Aerosols and Source Identification, Use and Interpretation of Satellite Data, Global Warming and Climate Change, Pollution and Emission Monitoring, Modeling in Environmental Studies, and Ozone Depletion. The course was designed to update knowledge and impart hands-on experience to the participants.

 

International Workshop on Satellite Imaging Technology and Applications
22 28 January 2003; Karachi, Pakistan

.

SUPARCO, in collaboration with COMSTECH, IDB and ISNET, organised an International Workshop on Satellite Imaging Technology and Applications from 22-28 January 2003. A number of delegations from OIC countries viz. Bangladesh, Iran, Malaysia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, and Uzbekistan participated in the workshop and made valuable contribution through their technical presentations on various topics. The scientists and engineers participating in the workshop also came up with positive recommendations after brainstorming sessions.

 

National Seminar on Atmospheric and Ionospheric Physics
19 August 2002; Karachi, Pakistan

.

SUPARCO organised a National Seminar on Atmospheric and Ionospheric Physics (AiP) on 19th August, 2002 at Avari Towers, Karachi. Twelve scientific papers were presented in the seminar.

 

International Seminar on Natural Hazards Monitoring
07 11 January 2002; Karachi, Pakistan

.

SUPARCO, in collaboration with COMSTECH, IDB and ISNET, organised an International Seminar on Natural Hazards Monitoring from 7-11 January 2002. About 57 scientists, engineers and policy makers from various OIC member countries attended the Seminar and presented their technical and policy papers, exchanged views and shared knowledge / expertise with their counterparts for establishing / strengthening meaningful cooperation in the field of Space Science, Space Technology and its applications.
