World Space Week was declared in 1999 by the United Nations General Assembly, implementing a key recommendation of the Third United Nations Conference on the exploration and peaceful uses of outer space (UNISPACE III). World Space Week is a public awareness program celebrated around the world from 4-10 October every year. Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Committee (SUPARCO), as a national space agency, celebrates WSW each year to increase awareness of space technology and to promote its peaceful usage amongst the masses, specially students and decision makers. For the past three years, Pakistan has been celebrating WSW in November due to Ramadan falling in October. |

In 2005 & 2006 & 2007, SUPARCO celebrated World Space Week in a very elaborate fashion and was successful in creating awareness among hundreds of school students of public and private schools in Karachi & Islamabad and many government schools in rural Sindh. The year 2007 being the 50th anniversary of the launch of SPUTNIK 1, the first artificial satellite, SUPARCO increased the span of its activities to a wider population. |
| |
SUPARCO has developed a special Science Caravan that it sends to the rural areas of the Sindh province as part of its initiative to create awareness of space to the under-privileged school students. Scientists from SUPARCO take this specially designed multi-media equipped bus to the rural areas and deliver lectures on space related topics, show documentaries to students and disseminate space education booklets to students. |

All WSW events get coverage in the print and electronic media. |
